AI in Focus: This Week's Best Stories!

Welcome back to The Chris Worsey Newsletter!

As we do every Friday, today we will be breaking down five of the most intriguing stories that caught my eye this week.

The theme? AI. It’s no secret that, in recent years, Artificial Intelligence has gripped the minds and attention spans of the world. Today, we will be exploring just how deep its influence has gone.

From education, to transport, sport, and more, stick around – there’s something here for everyone…

1) School: Big Changes…

See – as is the case with most things – when learning something new, ‘growing pains’ are common. Hardship will always exist; but what if there was a way to streamline efficiency in schools? What if – instead of focusing on traditional, standardised activity – students were encouraged to work on their deficiencies and maximise their strengths?

  • Earlier this week, Sky News ran a story regarding technological changes being implemented at a London-based college for the upcoming school year.

    • Focusing on the advanced capabilities of AI and VR, the school has gone as-far-as creating the United Kingdom’s first ever ‘teacherless’ class.

  • Specifically, in using a dedicated platform charged by AI, the school is looking to find answers to the question ‘why aren’t students learning?’

    • Learning the students’ strengths and weaknesses through a series of assessments, according to the school, the platform can accurately indicate what areas are most important for students to improve on and when during the year they should focus on them.

  • This will allow the school to create more efficient, personal, and tailored lesson plans.

2) A New Europe?

As we’ve mentioned before, in the case of more recent AI-based innovation, its strengths lie in its ability to improve people's lives and – on larger scales – work and safety.

Providing solutions to various industries, over the last few years, the technology has been able to solve complex problems and improve efficiency.

This company may well become the new drivers of innovation across Europe…

  • This week, writers at the Innovations News Network, highlighted a new company working to use AI to solve some of Europe’s most pressing public governance systems.

    • Named Cedar, the firm’s main goal is to improve transparency in the field of public governance, and use high quality data and AI to solve such issues.

  • Specifically, by collecting data from public administration sets, the firm is set to generate synthetic data to improve data quality and accessibility.

    • Employing AI and other big tech, Cedar will be able to develop worrying patterns and guard against corruption, fraud, and mismanagement to eventually create a safer and more efficient Europe.

3) The Future of Transport

The world of AI is interesting. With development evolving more rapidly than ever before, the space is at a crossroads. To break through, your ideas must be ironclad.

What does that mean for big corporations? Well, they have to respond. And the only way to do that is to keep innovating; to offer things that, once, were deemed inconceivable.

  • According to Bloomberg, Tesla is set to announce the creation of their newest invention: The Robotaxi

    • While Elon Musk and other key figures have refused to comment on what the announcement will entail, reporters are confident that the release will come on the 10th of October.

  • Expectations for the event seem to be the unveiling of a prototype – an electric, self-driving car that will be linked to a ride-hailing app similar to that of Uber

    • With details regarding the technology used set to be announced alongside the prototype, Tesla and – on wider scales – Musk’s work recently has heavily revolved around AI-autonomous work.

4) AI: A New Era

As AI continues its rapid development, one company has stood head and shoulders above the rest with regards to influence and innovation – OpenAI.

Being the creators of ChatGPT, over the last few years the company has continued to develop its technologies, reaching levels unseen-before.

This week, Ilya Sutskever – the firm’s co-founder – made waves in the industry. Here’s why:

  • This week, Ilya Sutskever and his team managed to raise $1 billion in funding for their new company Safe Superintelligence (SSI).

    • With investment being split between some of the world’s top venture capital firms, SSI is expected to perform very well and – in fact – could reshape the entire industry.

  • Looking to build avenues to ensure safety in the use of the very hyper-intelligent technologies we have been speaking about, using the money, SSI and its developers will specifically look to enhance computing capabilities and expand its team.

“We’ve identified a new mountain to climb that’s a bit different from what I was working on previously. We’re not trying to go down the same path faster. If you do something different, then it becomes possible for you to do something special.”

Ilya Sutskever

5) Roadblocks…

For all of AI’s breakthroughs, it’s important to note that nothing is perfect… With success and innovation, often comes a series of issues that – if not acted upon appropriately – could lead to unintended consequences.

In the case of AI, issues associated with its use, of course, exist. From bias in algorithms, to data privacy concerns, and ethical dilemmas, there are certain areas of regulation that have to be taken into account.

And for the first time across the United States, it seems California is taking action.

  • This week, the state of California passed an important legislation to regulate the use and implementation of AI.

    • Under new regulations, companies will be mandated to thoroughly test their products and disclose all potential safety risks and protocols for risk mitigation.

“Innovation and safety can go hand in hand—and California is leading the way”

Senator Scott Wiener
